History, Shutters rediscovered in Europe!
Shutters have a long history. The origin lies along the Mediterranean Sea, where at the time of ancient Greece was looking for a way to darken areas, while keeping well ventilated. The first Shutters were of marble. Heavy and inflexible, but cool and beautiful to see. Later also wooden variations were made. These shutters could open and close and got a whole new feature. They offered privacy, protected against rain and kept the insects outside. Simultaneously the shutters worked insulating which made them interesting for the colder regions of central Europe.
Glass windows were placed for the first time around the 15th century. Because of the high prices it were mainly the elite who could afford it. Sometimes the glass was only installed at the top of the window and the rest of the window stayed covered with Shutters. This became a real trend. When glass became more and more commonplace, Shutters had primarily a decorative function. In England for example, Shutters were in the early eighteenth century the symbol of style.
Especially the elegant, narrow version was and is popular. Meanwhile, the first Spanish settlers took the Shutters along to the South. On the cotton plantations caused the shutters with broad panels for cooling and became very popular. And that they always stayed. Now, centuries later, America is more than ever the land of the Shutters. For several decades, Europe is working on the rediscovery of the product Shutters.
SunShutters has responded to these developments and is currently the largest manufacturer of shutters in Europe!
